While Indian metros are seeking inspiration from the West for superfoods like quinoa, oats, chia and kale, there’s a quiet and powerful movement towards bringing back natively Indian superfoods and Indian alternatives to better choices in the food we eat. Here’s a rich trove I picked from Coimbatore recently.
– Thinai (in Thinai Vermicelli) is Foxtail Millet.
– Ragi
– Kambu/Bajra is pearl millet.
– Jowar is sorghum, of course, and very popular in Karnataka (as in jolada roti)
– Karupatti is palm jaggery, a better alternative to refined white sugar
And it’s not just the non-metros that are picking up on these trends. Even brands are riding on Indian superfoods and helping bring back our traditional food back. Like Soulfull’s Millet and Ragi variants.
It’s fantastic to see us going back to, and celebrating our roots.
