“Sir, filmein try karna. Sundar lag rahe ho”

A recent ad that caught my eye on TV and made me search for it on YouTube to see it again… all with a smile on my face 🙂

Loved Ogilvy Bangalore’s work for the new Titan EyePlus ad, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana.

When Ayushmann says ‘Main Madurai main hoon’ in the opening shot, my ears perked up! And then I got the plot, though the salesman’s accent part has not been overdone, and kept to a believable minimum, enough to power mild humor.

The most humorous moment is Ayushmann’s expression when the salesman offers, “Sir, filmein try karna. Sundar lag rahe ho. Matlab, hero lag rahe”.

I did consider the angle of someone in Madurai not knowing who Ayushmann is (or how he looks like) considering how popular he is these days (the very reason for Titan signing him up as a brand ambassador in the first place). A quintessential Madurai man would be far more engrossed in the movies and popularity of Thala-Thalapathy (or Ajith-Vijay) than Ayushmann Khurrana, regardless of how popular his movies are pan-India.

In some ways, it is expecting someone in Madurai to be aware of Amol Palekar during his peak in the 80s. Even though Ayushmann Khurrana is at a different level compared to Amol Palekar, he perhaps still represents a different kind of hero compared to the machismo-posturing so-called mainstream Hindi cinema hero who makes so much noise that it also reaches the innards of India. So yes, I think this scenario is plausible that a Madurai salesman may not identify Ayushmann Khurrana. 🙂
