Where do we create online communities around interests, these days?

Facebook? Orkut? Yahoo Groups? Tumblr?

Facebook and Orkut are social networking sites – you create your profile and then go on to connect with others on similar interests. Ideally. Yahoo Groups is a good community creation platform, but it is just a glorified mailing list. Tumblr…now that’s a good option and mighty easy to use too.

But how about an online community idea with the following features?

1. Posting information via assorted modes – via Tweets, via Facebook, via email, via direct posting etc.
2. Multiple formats for posts
3. The concept of revolving moderators – whoever is most active, gets to be the moderator for the time he/she’s active. This could help more people taking active interest in the group’s activity.
4. Search facility – search for any topic/personality on earth and find a group or claim one.

Basically, this is nothing but a glorified, online club idea. Just that the current options we have are extremely fragmented and not predictably easy to find…or there are way too many of them. Many of them are dead, defunct or pointless.

What do you think?
